Written description (project 1 B)

My interactive object is called “Magic Box”.  I got the inspiration for it from a little kid playing with mirror. A girl was catching sun and letting sunbeams on her mum’s face. I wanted to see how amazing effects reflection sometimes gives us can be.  So the object is really simple but quite effective. It is made of a storage cardboard box with a lid, black cardboard, soft mirror, flashlight, paper, cellophane and plastic chopstick. The user looks into the box, catches the light using axis (just like we all did in childhood when we were playing with mirror) and lets colorful sunbeams on the white wall of the box. The user can not only enjoy the pattern, but also change it however he or she likes by moving axis back and forward – closer  and further from the source of light.
The reason why I decided to concentrate on that particular idea and abandon the others is that cryptic and mysterious have mirrors always beckoned me and the girl letting sunbeams just reminded me of my own childhood when I loved to play with mirrors and light. The aim of making the “Magic Box” was to create something that would be as colorful and beautiful as rainbow is, something that could cheer up in a gloomy cold winter evening, something fun to play with.
